Ft. Zumwalt was an important local landmark early on, notable for its size. Nathan and Rebekah Heald were also avid supporters of education, establishing the first school in O’Fallon during the 1820s. Their son, Darius, was instrumental in moving the Woodlawn Institute to O’Fallon in 1878. This school for women included lessons on topics such as Latin, Greek, Mathematics, Music, and Literature.
