Did the slaves maintain some of their African heritage? PDF Print E-mail

Yes, the slaves did manage to hide some aspects of their African traditions, despite the efforts of slave owners to rid them of their heritage.

At Fort Zumwalt, an 1854 coin was found with a hole drilled through it. This African tradition of wearing reflective metal objects was used to keep away bad luck, similar to Catholics wearing a St. Christopher metal. The hole was drilled through Lady Liberty’s head, possibly a statement by the slave about the inequality of American liberty before the Civil War.
